1. Tools, strip selection, and coil formation
The slotted quilling tool has a metal tip with a 1–2 mm slot; the paper strip end is inserted into the slot and the tool rotated. Slotted tools are preferred by beginners because the slot grips the strip without requiring finger pressure, but the slot leaves a small kink at the coil center that is visible in open loose coils. The needle tool is a needle set into a handle; the strip is held against the needle with slight finger pressure and the tool rotated. Needle tools produce a tighter, more uniform coil center without the kink artifact, preferred by advanced quilling artists for fine detail and center-visible designs.
Paper strip widths: 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) is the standard width for most fine designs, doilies, jewelry, and portrait work; 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) for medium decorative elements; 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) for bold accent pieces and fringed flowers. Strip gsm: 80–100 gsm wood-pulp strips from standard suppliers (Lake City Craft, Quilled Creations) are appropriate for most work; 100–120 gsm cotton rag strips produce crisper roll edges and less fiber fray at pinch points. Grain direction: always roll with the grain (strip length parallel to fiber alignment); against-grain rolling produces inconsistent relaxed diameter and kinking. Test grain direction by flexing the strip in both orientations — the direction that flexes more easily is with-grain.
Coil sizing calibration: a quilling sizing board has circles of standard diameters (3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm, 16 mm) into which the rolled coil is dropped to find its relaxed diameter. Strip length determines the relaxed diameter at a given gsm: a 450 mm strip of 1/8 inch 80gsm strip relaxes to approximately 10 mm in a sizing board; a 300 mm strip relaxes to approximately 7 mm; a 150 mm strip to approximately 4 mm. Calibrate these for your specific paper stock on first use.
2. Coil shapes and their pinching techniques
Loose coil: roll the strip and allow it to relax in the sizing board to the desired diameter; apply a small dot of white glue (PVA, Tombow Mono Aqua, or Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue) to the free end and press to the outer coil. Tight coil: roll and glue immediately without releasing; the coil stays at maximum compression. Teardrop: form a loose coil, then pinch one side to a point while holding the circle with the other fingers. Marquise (eye or diamond): form a loose coil, then pinch two opposite sides simultaneously to two points; alignment of the two points relative to the coil center determines the symmetry. Half moon: marquise with one pinch offset from the true center, producing an asymmetric lens. Bent teardrop: pinch the teardrop point, then gently curve the body. S-coil: do not glue the strip; curl one end clockwise and the other counterclockwise in equal curls. V-scroll: one curl at one end, the other end left straight or curled in the opposite direction. C-scroll: both ends curled toward the same face of the strip in equal arcs.
3. Advanced techniques: 3D quilling, fringing, and husking
Three-dimensional quilling. Domed flower: form a tight coil; push the center upward with a stylus or the tip of a knitting needle from the back, creating a hemisphere. The dome height is controlled by the pressure applied and is fixed with a thin coat of PVA applied to the inside of the dome after shaping. On-edge quilling: strips are glued to the work surface standing upright on their edge rather than lying flat; this creates a dimensional raised structure used in shadow box and sculptural quilling. Bottle or cone structures: form a series of tight coils of graduated diameters (largest at base, smallest at top), then stack and glue them concentrically.
Fringing: take a standard-width strip and make cuts from one edge toward the center at 1–2 mm intervals using fringe scissors (scissors with multiple parallel blades) or a craft knife on a cutting mat, leaving the opposite edge uncut (the spine). Roll the fringed strip as normal; the fringe fans out radially from the tight coil center, producing a full flower center. Cut depth controls the fringe texture: shallow cuts (30% into width) produce short stiff fringes; deep cuts (70–80% into width) produce long fine fringes. Cut spacing controls density: 1 mm spacing for dense fluffy texture; 2 mm for open bristle texture.
Husking: a technique using a peg board (corkboard with pins at measured spacings) to form elongated shaped loops. Thread or strip is looped in repeated passes around pins at a set spacing, creating a layered petal or leaf shape that cannot be formed by rolling. Pin spacing determines petal proportion: two pins 15 mm apart produce a compact petal; two pins 30 mm apart produce an elongated leaf. Comb technique: wrap a strip repeatedly around the teeth of a quilling comb (a tool with regular teeth at 3–5 mm spacing), building up a chevron or feather structure with multiple nested loops; the comb acts as the peg board equivalent with fixed, closely spaced pin positions.
