Warp ikat: binding positions, dyeing sequence, and pattern formation at the crossing
Warp ikat applies resist bindings to warp thread bundles at calculated positions along the warp length before any thread goes on the loom. Thread bundles of 2–4 ends are grouped according to a motif grid drawn on graph paper, where each grid column represents one bundle and each row represents one unit of warp length equal to the pattern repeat. Resist material (plastic electrical tape for sharp edges, natural raffia for the traditional blurred abrash) is wound tightly around each bundle at every position where that bundle should resist the dye. After binding, the full warp is dyed in the lightest color first; sections that should remain light are re-bound before the next darker dye bath; this sequence continues from light to dark until all colors have been applied.
The pattern forms at the loom: each warp thread carries its dye colors in specific bands along its length, and as the plain un-patterned weft crosses each warp thread, the color at that crossing is the dye color of the warp at that point. The weft contributes only a background color — typically matched to the lightest undyed warp sections — so the full visible pattern is in the warp direction. The abrash blurry edge at pattern transitions is the defining visual characteristic of hand-bound warp ikat: threads shift by their own diameter during dyeing, unwarping, and weaving, producing a soft 3–8 thread-width transition at every color boundary that distinguishes hand-dyed ikat from printed imitation.
Open sett, warp loading, and weaving the ikat cloth
Warp ikat is woven at an open sett of 50–65% of the maximum tabby EPI for the yarn weight. At this sett each warp thread is separated from its neighbors by approximately its own diameter, keeping the dye-patterned surface of each thread individually visible against the plain weft. Loading the warp onto the loom requires strict maintenance of the thread order established at the warping board — any reversal of adjacent threads swaps the pattern columns at those positions. After threading the heddles and sleying the reed, the cloth is woven in plain weave with a weft matched to the undyed background sections of the warp. Beat tension should be consistent throughout: heavier beating compresses the weft and narrows the sett slightly, affecting pattern density in the weft direction; lighter beating opens the sett and elongates the pattern.
