Patreon tiers explained for fans: how to choose, upgrade, downgrade, or cancel (2026)
A Patreon tier is a subscription level a creator offers on their membership page. Each tier has a price the creator sets, a list of perks, and access rules — some content and community features are available at every tier, while others are locked to higher-priced tiers. This page covers how to evaluate what you're getting, how billing works when you change tiers, and what the November 2026 iOS billing change means if you subscribe through the Patreon mobile app.
What a Patreon tier includes
Tier perks fall into two broad categories: content perks and access perks. Content perks include patron-only posts, early access to public posts, behind-the-scenes updates, and exclusive downloads. Access perks include Discord server role assignment (access to locked channels), group video calls, private podcast RSS feeds, and direct messages with the creator.
Access perks tend to be more valuable for long-term membership retention because they create something ongoing to lose (a community you participate in) rather than just content that can be stockpiled and consumed. If a creator offers a Discord community as a core perk, that is typically the highest-value tier to consider — the community continues to exist as long as you're subscribed, and leaving it is a social cost, not just a financial one.

How to choose the right tier
The lowest tier on most Patreon pages gives access to patron-only posts. If that is the primary reason you want to subscribe, the lowest tier is the right choice — most creators do not put significantly different content behind higher tiers. Higher tiers are typically differentiated by access perks (Discord role, calls) rather than more exclusive content.
If the creator has a Discord community and it is listed as a higher-tier perk, consider whether you want to participate in the community or just follow the content. Discord access is worth the higher tier if you will actually engage. If you want to support the creator but don't plan to use Discord, the lower content-tier is more economical.
Upgrading or downgrading a tier mid-cycle
You can change your tier at any time in your Patreon membership settings. When you upgrade (move to a higher tier), the price difference is typically charged immediately on a prorated basis for the remainder of your billing cycle. When you downgrade (move to a lower tier), the change takes effect at your next billing date — you continue at the current tier through the end of the current period.
Discord role access changes reflect the new tier promptly after the change is processed. If you upgrade to a tier that includes Discord access, you should receive the server role within minutes. If you downgrade away from a Discord-included tier, the role is revoked at the end of the current billing period.
What the November 2026 iOS billing change means for patrons
Starting November 1, 2026, if you subscribe to a Patreon tier through the Patreon iOS app, your subscription routes through Apple's In-App Purchase system. For you as a patron, the price you pay is the same. The difference is that Apple deducts 30% before the creator receives the money — the creator sees significantly less of your pledge.
This is relevant if you want your subscription to have maximum impact for the creator. Subscribing on the web (through a browser, even on an iPhone) means 100% of your pledge goes to Patreon's billing system without Apple's cut. The creator receives $8.61 of your $10 pledge on Patreon Pro via web billing versus $5.61 via iOS in-app billing. The difference to the creator is $3.00 per month — $36 per year on a $10 tier.
Some creators will enable a web-only billing toggle that blocks iOS in-app subscriptions and directs you to subscribe via browser. If you see a message in the Patreon app directing you to use the website to subscribe, this is why.

What is the difference between Patreon tiers?
Tiers differ in price and perks. Lower tiers typically offer patron-only posts and early access. Higher tiers add access perks: Discord server role (locked channel access), private podcast RSS feed, group video calls, or direct messaging. The tier descriptions on a creator's Patreon page list exactly what is included at each level. Read them carefully — the difference between a $5 and $15 tier is sometimes meaningful (Discord access) and sometimes cosmetic (slightly earlier access to the same content).
Can I upgrade my Patreon tier and get Discord access immediately?
Yes. When you upgrade to a tier that includes Discord access, Patreon's integration assigns the Discord role typically within minutes of the upgrade processing. You need to have connected your Discord account to your Patreon profile first — this is a one-time step in your Patreon account settings under Apps & Integrations.
Should I subscribe via the Patreon app or on the web?
For the creator's benefit, subscribe via the web — even on an iPhone, open a browser (Safari or Chrome) and subscribe at patreon.com rather than through the iOS app. After November 1, 2026, subscribing via the iOS app routes through Apple's IAP system, and Apple deducts 30% before the creator receives any money. A $10 subscription via the app nets the creator $5.61 after November 2026; the same $10 via web nets $8.61. Your out-of-pocket cost is the same either way.
