Bead type tolerances: Miyuki Delica, Toho round, Czech fire-polished

Miyuki Delica cylinder beads (DB-series for 11/0, DBS-series for 15/0) are precision-extruded cylinder glass beads with a large hole relative to outer diameter (approximately 0.8mm hole vs 1.3mm OD for 11/0) and a flat-ended cylinder form rather than a rounded sphere. Dimensional tolerance is approximately ±0.01mm per bead in the 11/0 series, making them the tightest-toleranced mass-produced seed bead available. When Delicas are worked in flat peyote stitch, they interlock cylinder-to-cylinder: the flat ends of each bead contact the flat ends of adjacent beads in the prior row, producing a geometrically tight, nearly gap-free fabric with a woven-textile-like surface density. Thread path in peyote with Delicas passes through the large hole twice per bead (once each pass of the thread in the zigzag pattern); the large hole-to-OD ratio makes multiple thread passes per hole practical before the hole fills. Available in over 2,000 colors including matte, metallic, satin, galvanized, color-lined, transparent, and opaque finishes. The large flat-ended cylinder form means Delicas do not work well in stitches that require the bead to rotate freely (such as the unit-rotation in right-angle weave); they are optimal for peyote, square stitch, and even-tension brick stitch.

Toho seed beads (round, 11/0 and 15/0) are round sphere-form beads with a round cross-section and dimensional tolerance of approximately ±0.05mm. The round form means adjacent beads in peyote stitch touch at curved surfaces rather than flat faces, producing slightly wider visible gaps between beads (particularly at small counts) compared to Delica peyote. However, the round form is advantageous in stitches requiring bead rotation: in right-angle weave, the four beads in each unit must angle relative to each other as the stitch is tightened, and a round bead accommodates this angular adjustment more easily than a cylinder. Toho produces the AIKO series (a round seed bead with tighter tolerances than standard Toho rounds, approaching Delica consistency) as a premium option. Available in approximately 1,000 colors with full range of finishes.

Czech fire-polished beads are faceted glass beads (typically 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm) produced by pressing glass into a faceted form, then tumbling in a heated barrel to slightly melt and polish the facet edges (“fire polishing” rounds the sharp pressed-glass edges into smooth curves and increases the refractive quality of the cut). Dimensional tolerance in Czech fire-polished is ±0.1–0.2mm per bead, significantly wider than Delica or Toho. The larger tolerance means Czech fire-polished beads work best in right-angle weave and other stitches where small size differences between beads produce slight dimensional variation that is less visible at larger bead sizes. They are not suitable for flat peyote counting charts that assume uniform bead dimensions because cumulative size variation across a row produces visible wavy edge effects. Their primary advantage is the faceted surface: the facets reflect light at multiple angles simultaneously, producing a sparkle effect unavailable in smooth seed beads.

Thread mechanics: Fireline versus Nymo versus Wildfire

Fireline (Berkley, made from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, UHMWPE, a gelspun fiber) is the dominant thread choice for contemporary off-loom seed bead work. UHMWPE fiber (trade names: Dyneema, Spectra) is produced by gel-spinning extended-chain polyethylene from solution, producing fiber with molecular weight 3.5–7.5 million g/mol compared to standard polyethylene at 10,000–100,000 g/mol; the extended chain structure aligns the polymer chains parallel to the fiber axis, giving tensile strength approximately 15 times that of steel by weight. In beadweaving use: Fireline 6lb test in Crystal (clear) or Smoke (gray-black) is standard for 11/0 and 15/0 beads; 8lb for heavier work with larger beads. Fireline has near-zero stretch (unlike nylon); this means that tension set during stitching is permanent, producing tight, stiff, geometrically precise beadwork. The tradeoff: the rigidity that makes Fireline excellent for structural beadwork makes it slightly scratchy against skin in flexible jewelry, and the high-modulus fiber can abrade bead holes of lower-quality glass beads over years of wear. Fireline does not need waxing (the UHMWPE surface is hydrophobic and slick); it can be threaded through most beads without pre-waxing and resists tangles better than nylon. Knots in Fireline require 3–5 half-hitches rather than 2–3 because the slick surface reduces knot friction, but knots set with a dab of G-S Hypo Cement or clear nail polish are secure.

Nymo (a branded nylon monofilament thread made from nylon 6,6) is the historical standard for off-loom beadwork and remains preferred for herringbone stitch and other stitches where the thread plays a visible design role or where the softer, more flexible beadwork texture is desired. Nymo is available in sizes O, B, D, and F (in increasing diameter). Nylon thread stretches under load (typical strain 15–30% at break elongation for oriented nylon monofilament used in beading thread products); this stretch means Nymo beadwork sets to its final dimension only after the first wearing, as the tension equalizes. Nymo must be pre-waxed with beeswax or Thread Heaven (a polydimethylsiloxane-based wax conditioner) before use to prevent splitting and fraying when pulled through bead holes. Nymo is available in more colors than Fireline (matching thread color to bead color is important when thread is visible between beads, particularly at thread turns and in open-net stitches).

Wildfire (Beadalon, also gelspun UHMWPE, similar to Fireline) is a close functional equivalent to Fireline; some beaders find it easier to thread through needles due to a slightly softer construction. Available in Crystal (clear), Black, and White. The thread market also includes KO (Japanese bonded nylon), One-G (polyester), and various other options, each with slightly different stretch and abrasion profiles.

Bead count calculation and pattern scaling

Beadweaving pattern documentation requires specifying beads-per-inch (or beads per cm) in both the row direction and the column direction separately, because these dimensions differ by stitch and by bead type. In flat even-count peyote with Miyuki 11/0 Delica beads, typical dimensions are approximately 18–19 beads per inch in the column direction and 10–11 rows per inch in the row direction — the bead count is not square because each bead is taller than it is wide. This asymmetry matters when scaling: a 20-bead-wide, 40-row-tall peyote piece is approximately 1.1 inches wide (20/18.5) and 3.8 inches tall (40/10.5), not a 2:1 rectangle as the row:column ratio might suggest. Document beads-per-inch and rows-per-inch measurements for every bead type and size you use in your patterns, measured from finished swatches rather than calculated from nominal bead dimensions, because actual packed density differs from the theoretical maximum based on bead OD alone.
