Patreon for decoupage creators: adhesive dilution ratios, substrate preparation, tissue paper handling mechanics, sealing protocol, iOS rates, and the Apple Tax in 2026

Decoupage Patreons retain when they document the technical layer that finished-piece photographs and crafting tutorials compress out: adhesive dilution ratios that differ per application type (undiluted for cut paper, 1:1 for tissue paper, 2:1 as sizing primer); substrate preparation sequences that differ per surface material; tissue paper handling mechanics that prevent tearing rather than causing it; and topcoat sealing compatibility documentation so the finished piece does not craze or yellow. Decoupage audiences skew moderately to heavily iOS — Apple Tax exposure begins November 1, 2026.

Who decoupage creators are on Patreon

Paper decoupage artists build Patreons around technical documentation that makes the difference between a patron’s first project succeeding or tearing, bubbling, or peeling. The deliverable is not just “what the creator did” — it is the dilution ratio, the substrate prep sequence, and the topcoat compatibility that produced a durable result. Furniture upcyclers use decoupage as one element in a mixed-media finish and need substrate documentation for wood, metal, and glass furniture surfaces. Seasonal decoration makers produce ornaments, wreaths, and home décor objects where durability through humidity variation is the primary functional requirement. Mixed-media crafters integrate decoupage with acrylic paint, ink, and embossing techniques and need compatibility documentation for each combination.

A two-tier structure: Technique Documentation tier ($10–16/month) delivering product dilution ratios, substrate prep sequences, topcoat selection notes, and paper source documentation per project; and a Design Files and Tutorial tier ($22–38/month, capped at 10–15 patrons) adding printable pattern sheets and monthly project feedback.

Adhesive dilution ratios

Decoupage medium (PVA-based products: Mod Podge, Decoupage Creall, craft PVA mediums) behaves differently at different dilutions. Undiluted: for gluing cut-paper pieces with full adhesion strength. 1:1 dilution (equal parts medium and water): for tissue paper and single-ply napkin images where the paper tears under a loaded brush at full viscosity; the reduced viscosity allows the brush to slide over the wet tissue surface without catching fibers. 2:1 dilution (2 parts water, 1 part medium): as a sizing primer on bare porous wood, sealing the grain before the adhesive and paper application. Document the product brand and dilution ratio per function: PVA concentrations differ between brands and the 1:1 dilution for one product may not behave the same as 1:1 for another.

Substrate preparation by surface type

Raw wood (MDF, plywood, balsa): sand 180-grit, wipe clean, apply 2:1 sizing coat, dry completely, lightly sand 400-grit to knock back raised grain, wipe clean, then apply paper. Glass: clean with 99% isopropyl alcohol, apply glass-bonding adhesion primer, dry per manufacturer’s instructions, then proceed. Without glass primer, PVA-based decoupage peels from glass. Metal (tin, aluminum): clean with isopropyl alcohol, sand lightly 220-grit, apply metal primer, dry. Galvanized metal: etch primer required. Terracotta: seal the interior with PVA medium or waterproofing sealer before applying decoupage to the exterior, to prevent moisture transfer through the pot wall from lifting the adhesive layer.

Tissue paper handling and topcoat sealing

Tissue paper technique: apply 1:1 diluted medium to the substrate, allow to become tacky (30–60 seconds), float the dry tissue onto the tacky surface without pre-wetting the tissue. Use a wide flat soft brush loaded with 1:1 medium, smoothing the tissue in parallel strokes from center outward — parallel strokes only, not circular or cross-hatching, which tear tissue fibers. Bubbles under wet tissue disappear on drying if undisturbed. Topcoat compatibility: water-based varnishes (polycrylic, water-based polyurethane) are compatible with PVA medium. Solvent-based varnishes (oil-based polyurethane, lacquer) may craze PVA medium — test on a sample before applying to finished work. Anti-yellowing: Mod Podge Matte yellows less than Gloss formulas on light-background pieces; specify UV-stabilized medium or topcoat for pieces with white backgrounds. Outdoor pieces require four coats of outdoor-rated topcoat.

iOS rates and Apple Tax for decoupage creators

Decoupage audiences: TikTok process and reveal: 75–85% iOS. Instagram finished piece photography: 70–80% iOS. YouTube tutorials: 58–70% iOS. At $200/month 75% iOS: approximately $45/month ($540/year). At $250/month 72% iOS: approximately $54/month ($648/year). At $300/month 62% iOS: approximately $55.80/month ($669.60/year). Enable Patreon’s web-only billing toggle before October 31, 2026. KeepTier is a self-hosted membership page with zero Apple Tax. Plans from $9/month.
