Ribbon stitch: center-pierce symmetric curl

Ribbon stitch is the defining stitch of ribbon embroidery and the technique that makes ribbon embroidery distinct from any other embroidery form: the needle passes through the ribbon itself at the tip of the petal, rather than only through the fabric, creating the characteristic curling petal tip. The mechanics step by step: bring the ribbon up through the fabric at the petal base, pulling through until approximately 5mm of ribbon tail remains on the wrong side (or anchor the tail with a waste knot before starting). Hold the ribbon flat against the fabric in the direction of the petal, without twisting. At the desired petal tip position — the distance from the base determines petal length — hold the ribbon flat with the left thumb and push the needle point down through the center of the ribbon, piercing through the ribbon width from top to bottom exactly midway between the two selvage edges. Continue pushing the needle through the ribbon and into the fabric beneath in one motion. The result is a petal tip that bends distinctly to one side: one edge of the petal curls under and around while the opposite edge lies open and relatively flat.

Japanese ribbon stitch is preferred for: leaves with a naturalistically curled or folded tip (pierce the left edge to create a right-curling leaf tip, or vice versa); petals in a radial flower arrangement that should lean away from the center (directional curl adds movement to a static composition); and any element where the slightly formal symmetric curl of standard ribbon stitch looks too uniform. A composition that mixes ribbon stitches (symmetric curl) with Japanese ribbon stitches (asymmetric curl) on petals of the same flower produces a more naturalistic, varied petal arrangement.

Straight ribbon stitch and loop petal

Straight ribbon stitch is the simplest ribbon embroidery stitch: the ribbon is brought up through the fabric at one end, carried flat across the fabric surface without twisting, and taken back down through the fabric at the far end, anchoring the ribbon as a flat ribbon-width band on the surface. No ribbon-piercing is involved; the ribbon simply lies flat between its two anchor points. Straight ribbon stitch produces flat bands used for leaves, long petals that are intended to appear flat (iris falls), stems, and fill elements where the ribbon width creates a broad stripe of color. The ribbon must be kept perfectly untwisted during working or the stitch appears narrow and irregular.

Loop petal creates a free-standing three-dimensional petal that rises above the fabric surface as an open loop. Bring the ribbon up through the fabric at the petal base position. Hold the ribbon in a loop above the fabric surface, determining the desired petal height by the size of the loop. Take the needle back down through the fabric at the same hole (or 1mm away) at the base, anchoring the loop at its base. The ribbon loop remains free above the fabric surface, creating a round or oval petal shape that stands dimensionally above the fabric. For consistency across multiple loop petals in a flower: before anchoring the ribbon back through the fabric, slip a toothpick, small dowel, or loop gauge rod inside the loop and hold it in position as the ribbon is anchored down. All loops formed over the same gauge rod will have the same interior height. Remove the gauge rod after anchoring. For a flower composed entirely of loop petals, work the petals in a circle from the outside inward so that the outer petals can overlap the bases of the inner petals naturally.

The gathered rose is worked from a single length of ribbon (typically 7mm or 13mm for a rose of useful visual scale — 4mm ribbon produces a very small rose appropriate for buds or miniature compositions). Cut a ribbon length of approximately 15–20cm for a 7mm rose or 25–35cm for a 13mm rose; the length determines the finished rose diameter. Thread a needle with a doubled sewing thread or fine matching thread; anchor it at one end of the ribbon with a knot through the ribbon selvage. Work a running stitch along one long edge of the ribbon (one selvage), taking small stitches (3–5mm) along the selvage, staying within 2mm of the edge so the gathering thread is close to but not on the very edge of the ribbon. Continue running stitches along the full ribbon length.

Pull the gathering thread firmly to draw the ribbon into tight gathers, reducing the ribbon length to approximately one-third of its original length. The gathered edge becomes the inner center of the rose and the ungathered edge becomes the outer petals. Begin coiling the gathered ribbon into a rose shape: start with a tight central coil (2–3 turns of gathered ribbon to form the bud center), then continue coiling outward in increasingly open turns, allowing the ungathered edge to flare outward as natural petals. Every 3–4 turns, take a few stitches through the rose base with the needle and thread to secure the coil in position. When the rose reaches the desired diameter, cut the ribbon and tuck the raw end under the rose base, securing it with stitches. The completed rose is stitched to the ground fabric at its flat base, taking stitches through the base layers from the front or attaching from the back. Finishing the rose center: a single seed bead or a French knot worked in a contrasting thread at the very center of the tight coil finishes the rose center and anchors the innermost turn.

Chenille needle sizing for ribbon embroidery

The chenille needle is the correct needle type for ribbon embroidery: it has a large oval eye that accommodates ribbon flat without folding, creasing, or crushing the ribbon fiber, and a sharp point that allows clean piercing through the ground fabric. Needle sizes are numbered inversely (lower number = larger needle): size 18 is the largest commonly used in ribbon embroidery, appropriate for 13mm ribbon and for 7mm ribbon when the ground fabric weave is tight; size 20 is appropriate for 7mm ribbon on standard linen and for 4mm ribbon on heavier fabrics; size 22 is appropriate for 4mm ribbon on fine linen or when the smallest possible fabric hole is desired to keep the fabric from distorting visibly around the needle entry points.

The critical sizing criterion: the needle eye must accommodate the ribbon width lying flat in the eye, not folded. To thread ribbon in a chenille needle, cut the ribbon end on a sharp diagonal; fold approximately 1cm of the ribbon end over the needle shaft (not through the eye); pull the folded ribbon tight against the shaft; then push the fold through the needle eye from the back of the needle — the compressed fold passes through more easily than a flat ribbon end pushed eye-first. Once through, the ribbon unfolds on the other side of the eye, lying flat as it passes through the fabric during stitching. A needle eye that is too small will crease or compress the ribbon as it passes through, creating visible fold lines in the stitched ribbon on the fabric surface.
