The primary stitch is the double back stitch, also called closed herringbone when described from the right side of the fabric. Working from the wrong side: two parallel outline lines are drawn or transferred onto the fabric (or the needle follows a traced design), one along each edge of the petal, leaf, or shape to be filled. The working thread is brought up on one of these outline lines and a back stitch (3–5mm in length) is worked along that line to the right. The working thread then crosses diagonally to the opposite outline line (traveling across the interior of the shape on the wrong side) and a back stitch of the same length is worked along that line to the right. The needle alternates continuously: a back stitch on the lower outline, diagonal crossing thread, back stitch on the upper outline, diagonal crossing thread, back stitch on the lower outline, and so on.
The result has two distinct faces. On the right side (the face of the fabric, the side that will show): two parallel rows of running-stitch-like outline appear along the design edges — the back stitch entries and exits show as a broken outline. On the wrong side (the back, the side being worked): the interior of the outlined shape is filled with a series of diagonal crossing threads, one for every stitch alternation, creating a dense herringbone-pattern fill of thread color. Because the fabric is sheer (organza or voile), this mass of crossing fill threads on the wrong side is visible through the fabric from the front as a colored shadow block filling the outlined shape. The outlined shape appears filled with color from the front, but the fill threads are actually on the back.
Stitch length and thread weight
Back stitch length for shadow work: 3–5mm per stitch, with the diagonal crossing thread from one outline to the other between each alternation. Thread color and shadow effect
White or ecru thread on white organza produces the classic shadow work look: the fill threads on the wrong side create a bright white or warm-white shadow interior visible through the sheer fabric. This is the traditional choice for wedding linens, christening sets, and heirloom-style embroidery. The shadow appears as a slightly opaque white or ivory fill within the outlined shapes, creating textural rather than color contrast. This is the look most commonly associated with shadow work and the most widely documented in historical needlework references.
Pastel or colored thread on white or light-colored sheer fabric produces a colored shadow: the thread color is visible as a color fill through the fabric from the front, but it appears approximately 1–2 value steps lighter and slightly diffused compared to the actual thread color. A soft coral thread appears as a pale blush shadow; a medium periwinkle appears as a light lavender shadow. This lightening and diffusing effect is caused by the white or near-white warp and weft threads of the organza or voile fabric overlying the colored fill on the wrong side, mixing optically with the thread color. The practical implication: when selecting thread color for a colored shadow effect, choose a thread 1–2 values deeper or more saturated than the shadow color you want to see from the front, to compensate for the lightening effect of the sheer layer.
Avoid very dark or highly saturated colors (navy blue, black, deep burgundy, forest green) in traditional shadow work on white sheers. The density of the wrong-side fill threads in dark colors creates an effect that reads as nearly opaque from the front rather than translucent, losing the characteristic lightness and delicacy of the shadow work aesthetic. Fabric selection: organza and voile

Batting shadow variant and apliqué shadow technique

In this technique, a shape is cut from a thin layer of polyester batting or wool felt, slightly smaller than the outline of the design shape on the ground fabric. This batting piece is stitched to the wrong side of the ground fabric (which may be sheer or non-sheer for this variant), positioned within the outlined design shape. The batting creates a raised mound beneath the outline on the right side of the fabric.
Surface embroidery is then worked over the batting from the right side of the fabric: the stitches pass through the fabric and through or around the batting beneath, anchoring it in place and covering the batting surface with embroidery. The batting creates a dimensional raised shadow effect — the embroidered element is slightly elevated above the fabric surface, casting a subtle shadow at its edges that gives depth and three-dimensionality to the design. This is distinct from the transparent fill shadow of double back stitch: the batting variant creates a literal physical shadow from raised surface relief, rather than an optical shadow from fill threads visible through sheer fabric.
The batting variant is used for decorative items (framed pictures, decorative pillows, embroidered box lids, wall panels) where dimensional effects are desirable and durability through washing and handling is secondary.
