1. Base triangle: single-stitch increase, diagonal bias, and what “complete” means
The entrelac base triangle is the foundation of the entire fabric’s diagonal direction. It grows by one stitch per right-side row through a repeated single-stitch cast-on at the start of each RS row, building from 1 stitch up to the target block width n.
The construction sequence for a base triangle with target width 10: cast on 1. RS row 1: k1, turn. WS row 1: p1, turn. RS row 2: cast on 1, k2, turn. WS row 2: p2, turn. RS row 3: cast on 1, k3, turn. WS row 3: p3, turn — continuing until the RS row begins with “cast on 1, k10, turn” and the following WS row purls 10. At the completion of that WS row, the triangle is done: it contains 10 live stitches and sits on the right needle.
The left edge of each RS row is the edge being grown. The cast-on produces a new stitch at that left edge, extending the row by one before any existing stitches are worked. This is structurally different from an increase worked into an existing stitch (M1, kfb, yo). A standard increase borrows yarn from the existing fabric at the increase point; the single-stitch cast-on adds a new selvedge stitch from new yarn. The difference is visible: an M1 or kfb at the beginning of a RS row produces a small interruption in the left-edge column, visible in the finished work as a subtle texture variation at the triangle’s left corner. The cast-on method (knitted cast-on or cable cast-on, one stitch per RS row) produces a clean selvedge appropriate for a piece where the triangle’s left edge will be internal to the fabric.
After the first base triangle is complete with n stitches on the needle, the next base triangle begins immediately: cast on 1, k1, turn; cast on 1, k2, turn — exactly the same sequence again. The second triangle builds beside the first, not connected to it at this stage. All base triangles in the first row are worked in sequence; when the last triangle is complete, the first row of base triangles is done and the needle holds m triangles × n stitches = mn live stitches in total, arranged as peaks at the tops of the triangles.
The triangle is “complete” in the sense that it has reached its target stitch count and is ready to function as the join target for the first row of rectangles. It is not bound off, not transferred to a holder — the live stitches remain on the needle and will be consumed one per RS row as the first right-leaning rectangle works across them.
For Patreon creators, the base triangle module is the first instructional unit that establishes all the patterns the student will use throughout the project: working short rows (turning before the row is complete), building stitch count through a repeated action, and thinking of the needle as holding multiple independent units simultaneously rather than one continuous piece. A common beginner error at this stage is forgetting to cast on the additional stitch at the start of each RS row, instead working a plain knit row of the current stitch count — producing a parallelogram instead of a triangle. The triangle check: after every RS row, the stitch count should have grown by 1 compared to the previous RS row.
2. Right-leaning rectangle: pick-up from the left edge and ssk join on every RS row
The first row of rectangles begins after all base triangles are complete. Each rectangle picks up n stitches along the left edge of one adjacent completed block (the pick-up source), then works short rows that join the rectangle to the block on the rectangle’s right side (the join target) one stitch per RS row.
Pick-up from the left edge: the left edge of a completed entrelac block (triangle or rectangle) presents a series of selvedge stitches, one per two physical rows of knitting. The target pick-up rate is 1 stitch per 2-row ridge — one stitch per knit ridge visible on the right face of the block’s left selvedge. For a block of width n, there are exactly n ridges along the side edge, yielding exactly n pick-up stitches when working at the correct rate.
The needle path for each pick-up stitch: insert the right needle tip from front to back through the small horizontal bar at the base of the selvedge stitch V on the right face of the block edge (not through the stitch body itself, and not through the back loop, which would produce a twisted stitch). Wrap yarn and pull through. This produces a clean, untwisted pick-up stitch. Work from the base of the block upward along the edge (toward the live stitches at the top), picking up 1 per ridge until all n have been picked up.
After picking up all n stitches from the pick-up source, the rectangle begins its working sequence. The join target is the block to the right, whose n live stitches are still on the needle (unworked from the base triangle row or a previously completed rectangle).
The rectangle working sequence (right-leaning, n = 10 as an example):
- WS row: p10, turn.
- RS row: k9, ssk (last rectangle stitch + first join-target stitch), turn. [Rectangle still has 10 sts; 1 stitch from join target consumed.]
- WS row: p10, turn.
- RS row: k9, ssk, turn. [1 more join-target stitch consumed.]
This RS/WS cycle repeats. Each RS row consumes exactly 1 stitch from the join target via ssk. Each WS row purls all current rectangle stitches without joining. After 10 RS rows, 10 join-target stitches have been consumed, the join target is exhausted, and the rectangle is complete.
The stitch count of the rectangle stays constant at n throughout: each RS row’s ssk reduces the rectangle by 1 stitch (working 2 as 1), but simultaneously draws in 1 stitch from the join target, so the net count is unchanged. The rectangle remains n stitches wide from its first row to its last.
The rectangle is complete when both of the following are simultaneously true: (1) the join target holds 0 remaining live stitches, and (2) the rectangle has just finished a RS row. At this point the live stitches of the completed rectangle sit on the needle, ready to function as the join target for the next layer of rectangles.
The critical invariant: pick-up count = join count = block width = n. If the pick-up count was 9 instead of 10 (one stitch short), the rectangle runs out of join-target stitches after 9 RS rows but still has rectangle stitches left — or alternatively, the rectangle’s 10th row cannot complete its ssk because the join target is empty. If the pick-up count was 11, the rectangle completes 10 RS rows consuming all join-target stitches but still has the 11th row to work, which cannot join to anything. Both discrepancies require frogging the rectangle back to the pick-up row.
3. Left-leaning rectangle: mirrored pick-up from the right edge and k2tog join
The left-leaning rectangle is the mirror image of the right-leaning rectangle. It picks up stitches from the right edge of the adjacent completed block (the pick-up source) rather than the left edge, and joins to the block on its left side (the join target) using k2tog instead of ssk.
Pick-up from the right edge: the right edge of a completed block presents the same structure as the left edge — selvedge stitches at 1 per 2-row ridge — but approached from the other direction. Work from the top of the block downward along the right edge (from the live-stitch peak downward toward the block’s base), picking up n stitches at the same 1-per-ridge rate. The direction of pick-up (downward along the right edge vs upward along the left edge) determines the lean direction: right-edge pick-up produces a left-leaning block, left-edge pick-up produces a right-leaning block.
The working sequence (left-leaning): WS row: pn, turn. RS row: ssk or k2tog? The join for a left-leaning rectangle uses k2tog at the beginning of the RS row, not ssk at the end: k2tog (first join-target stitch + first rectangle stitch), kn−1, turn. This structure joins to the block on the left at the beginning of each RS row rather than the end, which is what produces the left-leaning orientation.
After n RS rows, the join target is exhausted and the rectangle is complete, exactly as with the right-leaning version. The live stitches of the completed left-leaning rectangle become the join target for the next layer.
Right-leaning and left-leaning rectangles alternate in each row of blocks: in a right-leaning-first row, block positions 1, 3, 5 are right-leaning and positions 2, 4, 6 are left-leaning (or vice versa depending on the starting orientation). The alternating lean produces the characteristic crossed-diagonal visual pattern that makes entrelac look woven from the front.
4. Why the three counts must all equal n, and what happens when they diverge
The self-assembling quality of entrelac rests on a single structural invariant: pick-up count = join count = block width = n. The block width n is the number of stitches worked in each row of each block. The pick-up count is the number of stitches picked up from the adjacent block’s side edge. The join count is the number of RS rows worked in the new rectangle (one join stitch consumed per RS row). When all three are n, the rectangle arrives at completion exactly when the pick-up source’s contribution is exhausted and the join target’s live stitches are all consumed. The fabric closes perfectly: no gaps, no puckering, no misaligned edges.
When the pick-up count is wrong, the invariant breaks in two ways:
Too few pick-up stitches (pick-up count < n): the rectangle reaches its height limit (n RS rows and join-target exhausted) while still holding live stitches that belong to the pick-up source but were not picked up. The fabric is under-connected at that block’s left or right edge, producing a gap or buckling seam. Sometimes the rectangle appears to complete normally, but the finished fabric shows a small horizontal hole at the base of the block where the missed pick-up stitches left an unanchored thread.
Too many pick-up stitches (pick-up count > n): the join target is exhausted before the pick-up-source contribution is consumed. The last RS row cannot complete its ssk or k2tog because there are no join-target stitches remaining. The rectangle is stuck mid-completion, and the only resolution is to frog back to the pick-up row.
For Patreon creators, this invariant is the single most important concept to teach before any needles touch yarn: every count in entrelac — the cast-on, the number of base-triangle increases, the number of pick-up stitches, and the number of RS rows worked in each rectangle — must equal the same number n. Demonstrating the invariant with a small swatch (n = 4 or 5) before the actual project prevents the most common error class entirely.
5. Row 2 and later rows: picking up from rectangle edges, not base-triangle edges
The first row of rectangles picks up from base triangle edges. The second row and all subsequent rows pick up from the edges of the completed rectangles from the prior row. The mechanics are identical — 1 pick-up stitch per 2-row ridge, knitwise, from the selvedge of the prior block — but the visual appearance of the pick-up source is slightly different because rectangle edges have a different texture than base-triangle edges.
The rectangle edge has been formed by working short rows with turning, which produces a selvedge that alternates between slip-stitch turns and end-of-row turns depending on whether the knitter slips the first stitch of each row. A commonly taught technique for cleaner entrelac edges is to slip the first stitch of every row purlwise with yarn in front (for WS rows) or yarn in back (for RS rows), producing a chain selvedge that makes the pick-up points more clearly defined: each chain loop corresponds to exactly one ridge, making the 1-per-ridge pick-up rate easier to maintain without counting ridges manually.
In later rows, the direction of alternating lean also shifts: a row of right-leaning rectangles is followed by a row of left-leaning rectangles and vice versa, with each rectangle picking up from the top edge of the block diagonally below it in the prior row. “Picking up from the top edge” is slightly different from “picking up from the side edge”: the top edge of a completed block presents live stitches on the needle (not a bound-off edge) in most entrelac constructions, so the new block simply picks up these live stitches directly — no pick-up-knitwise action needed, just slipping the stitches from the old needle to the working needle. This detail (live-stitch transfer vs true pick-up along a selvedge edge) is the second most commonly confused step in entrelac. The rule: pick up along a SIDE edge (one pick-up per ridge); transfer directly when picking up along a TOP edge (one-to-one, live stitch to live stitch).
6. Corner triangles: squaring the finished edges
Without edge treatment, a flat entrelac fabric has a stepped or sawtooth perimeter because the diagonal block construction leaves triangular points at the top, bottom, and side edges. Corner triangles (and edge triangles) are shaped pieces worked to fill these points and produce straight selvedges and square corners.
Left-edge triangle (filling the triangular gap at the left side of the fabric): pick up n stitches along the right edge of the leftmost completed block in the current block row. Work short rows that join on the right (consuming join-target stitches one per RS row, as in a standard rectangle) and simultaneously decrease on the left (working k2tog or ssk at the left edge of each RS row, consuming the triangle itself one stitch per RS row). Two stitches are removed per RS row (one from the join target, one from the triangle itself), so the triangle shrinks by 1 stitch per RS row. After n RS rows: the join target is exhausted and the triangle is reduced to 0 stitches. The left side of the fabric at this row is now a straight vertical line, filled in cleanly.
Right-edge triangle: the mirror of the left-edge triangle, with pick-up from the left edge of the rightmost block and k2tog at the right edge of each RS row.
Top-edge triangles (for the final row of the fabric, squaring the top): pick up from the left or right side edge of a block in the penultimate row, then work the rectangle short-row sequence but with a decrease on the unused side of the triangle, reducing the triangle to 0 by the time the top edge is reached. The result is a flat straight top edge across the entire fabric.
True corner triangle (at a 90-degree corner of a rectangular piece): works joins to two adjacent neighbors simultaneously — one stitch consumed from the block to the right on each RS row and one stitch consumed from the block above on each WS row (or both joins on the RS via a double decrease), reducing the corner triangle from n stitches to 0 in n rows. The corner triangle is the most complex piece in entrelac and is typically taught last.
For Patreon creators, breaking the edge and corner pieces into a dedicated “finishing module” after students have mastered the interior rectangle is the standard curriculum structure. Students who attempt edge triangles at the same time they learn the base rectangle frequently confuse the two-sided decrease mechanism with the one-sided join mechanism and produce misshapen edges. Teaching the interior rectangle to fluency first, then introducing edge triangles as a variation, reduces re-work and confusion substantially.
7. Row-2 direction of alternation and block sequencing
In the first row of rectangles, each rectangle’s join target is one of the base triangles from the first row. The rectangles work left to right across the fabric (or right to left, depending on the starting orientation). In the second row, the lean direction reverses: if row 1 used right-leaning rectangles, row 2 uses left-leaning ones. This alternation continues for every row of blocks, producing the characteristic herringbone or twill-like appearance of entrelac.
The sequencing in each row is also important: blocks within a row must be worked in order because each block’s join target is the block that was just completed to one side. You cannot skip a block and return to it later, because the join target for the skipped block would require stitches from the already-completed neighboring block’s live stitch set, which will have been consumed by that point. Entrelac must be worked strictly in sequence across each row, block by block, with no possibility of “jumping around” within a row.
This sequencing constraint is an important point for Patreon pattern writing: the written pattern must be explicit about working order within each row, and must number or name blocks clearly enough that students can identify which block is the “current” block and which is the “join target.” A pattern that says “work rectangle B” without specifying whether B means the second block in the row or the second block worked in the session is a common source of student confusion.
8. Color-block entrelac: yarn-change timing and carry method
Color changes in entrelac are naturally block-bounded: each block can be a different yarn color because color transitions happen at the start of a new block, not mid-row. This makes entrelac an ideal structure for gradient colorwork or checked color patterns without the float management required by Fair Isle or the yarn-management complexity of intarsia.
Block-by-block color change (single color per block): cut the outgoing yarn at the completion of the previous block, join the new color at the first stitch of the new block, and leave tails to weave in later. The join point — whether at the start of a pick-up or at the first WS row after the pick-up — should be consistent within the fabric for a clean appearance. Starting the new color at the first pick-up stitch gives a cleaner transition than starting it at the first WS row.
Row-by-row color change (same color for all blocks in one row, different color for the next row): carry the inactive color along the edge of the completed blocks in the prior row. The carried yarn is anchored by the pick-up stitches of the new row’s blocks, which wrap around the carried strand as each pick-up stitch passes through the selvedge. This eliminates the need to cut and rejoin for every row, at the cost of a small strand visible at the fabric’s edges (acceptable for a blanket, less so for a shawl worn with the edges visible).
Gradient entrelac: assign each horizontal row of blocks a position in the color gradient sequence, changing color at the start of each new row. A 5-color gradient across 12 block rows: colors 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5 (or any distribution). The gradient appears as a smooth horizontal band of color across each row, with diagonal block boundaries creating a chevron-like texture within each color band.
Checked or plaid entrelac: alternate two colors within the same row of blocks (Color A for odd-numbered blocks, Color B for even-numbered blocks), and then reverse the assignment in the next row. The alternating diagonal lean means the two-color assignment reads as a “staggered check” on the right face — each square is surrounded by squares of the opposite color, not adjacent same-color squares.
For Patreon creators, demonstrating color-change timing on camera — specifically where to cut the old yarn, how much tail to leave for weaving, and whether the new color starts on the pick-up or on the first WS row — is the critical visual information that written patterns cannot convey clearly. Students who start the new color on the WS row after the pick-up instead of at the first pick-up stitch produce a single-row stripe of the old color along the top of each block where the pick-up was worked in the prior yarn.
9. In-the-round entrelac: direction reversal and its consequences for join mechanics
Entrelac worked in the round (for tubes, hats, and bags) differs from flat entrelac in one critical way: the direction of travel around the round is always the same (no WS rows, always moving to the right in the knitter’s frame), which means the short-row WS turns are eliminated.
In flat entrelac, each block works RS rows (knit) and WS rows (purl) alternately, with the fabric reversed between them. In circular entrelac, each block still works its short rows, but the “WS rows” are now also knit from the right side — the block is worked in garter stitch rather than stockinette because every row is a RS-facing row.
The join mechanics change: in flat entrelac, the ssk or k2tog join occurs on RS rows only. In circular entrelac, joins can occur on every row (including the purl-equivalent row) depending on the construction method chosen. The most common circular-entrelac approach works each block entirely in one direction (all RS, all garter) and places the join at the end of every row, allowing the fabric to read as a continuous round rather than a back-and-forth structure.
For Patreon creators, in-the-round entrelac is typically offered as an advanced module after flat entrelac is mastered. The most common teaching sequence: flat scarf (base triangles + rectangles in both orientations + corner triangles) → flat shawl (gradient color-block + edge triangles for a triangular shawl shape) → circular bag or hat (in-the-round entrelac with garter-stitch blocks and continuous-direction join).
10. Wet-blocking entrelac: diagonal bias expansion and measurement
Entrelac is a bias-constructed fabric: all blocks are worked on the diagonal, and the fabric has a bias grain rather than a vertical/horizontal grain. Bias knitting behaves differently from stockinette under wet blocking: bias fabrics expand significantly more in both dimensions under wet conditions, particularly in the diagonal direction, and they are also more prone to draping and distortion after blocking because the bias grain has less resistance to stretching in any direction.
Relaxed-to-blocked dimensions: a typical flat entrelac swatch will expand 10–25% in width and 10–20% in length under wet blocking with pinning. The actual amount depends heavily on yarn fiber content (superwash wool expands more than untreated wool; cotton expands less; silk expands significantly) and needle size relative to the yarn weight. Always block a full-block-width swatch (at least 2×2 blocks) rather than a stockinette swatch when calculating entrelac dimensions, because the bias construction gives the yarn a structurally different experience than stockinette.
Blocking method: wet-block entrelac by submerging in lukewarm water, squeezing gently (not wringing), pressing in a towel to remove excess water, then pinning to finished dimensions on a blocking mat. Pin at regular intervals along all four edges, pulling gently to the target dimensions. The bias construction allows significant pulling in any direction — much more than stockinette — but overpulling will distort the block shapes from diamonds into elongated parallelograms. A correctly blocked entrelac piece has blocks that appear as nearly-equal squares when viewed straight-on from the right side.
Spray blocking (misting without soaking) is less effective for entrelac than full wet-blocking because the bias grain requires full fiber relaxation to reach its blocking dimensions. A misted entrelac swatch will expand partially but not fully; a second wet-block session will expand it further, making spray-blocked measurements unreliable.
For Patreon creators, the gauge documentation for an entrelac pattern must specify both relaxed and blocked measurements for the full block unit, and must note the blocking method used (wet-block or spray) because the two produce significantly different final dimensions. A pattern that specifies “10 stitches = 4 inches in entrelac pattern” without specifying the blocking state is giving a measurement that varies by 20% or more depending on what the student does.
11. Tier structure for entrelac Patreon creators
The natural curriculum hierarchy of entrelac maps well to a three-tier Patreon structure:
Tier 1 — Block Builder ($15–18/month): monthly pattern for a flat single-color or two-color entrelac project — a dishcloth, small scarf, or pot holder — with written instructions for base triangles, right-leaning rectangles, left-leaning rectangles, and bound-off top edge (no corner triangles required for a dishcloth-shaped piece with a knitted-on border). Pattern PDF includes swatch instructions with gauge chart in both relaxed and blocked dimensions.
Tier 2 — Diagonal ($28–35/month): monthly pattern plus video demonstrating the pick-up sequence frame-by-frame (including close camera on exactly which bar to insert the needle for each pick-up stitch), and a color-planning module for gradient or checked colorwork showing how to calculate row count for a target gradient. Patterns at this tier include edge triangles for a squared finished rectangle.
Tier 3 — Structural ($50–65/month): monthly pattern plus video plus a design module covering one of: corner triangles (true 90-degree corner for blankets and rectangular shawls), in-the-round entrelac (circular bag or hat), stitch pattern variation within blocks (working seed stitch or a short cable repeat within the rectangle unit), or entrelac garment shaping (increasing and decreasing block rows for a triangular shawl or shaped armhole).
12. Apple Tax: what entrelac knitting Patreon creators lose from November 2026
Entrelac and modular knitting audiences are predominantly experienced knitters who consume tutorial content through YouTube, Ravelry pattern pages, and Instagram. iOS rates by platform: YouTube entrelac and modular knitting tutorial channels 65–75% iOS. Instagram entrelac project photography and process documentation accounts 68–80% iOS. Ravelry-linked Patreons (patrons who arrive from Ravelry pattern pages) 60–72% iOS, somewhat lower because Ravelry’s own interface has historically been browser-first.
Starting November 1, 2026, Patreon applies Apple’s 30% iOS billing surcharge to all subscriptions purchased or renewed through the Patreon iOS app. The fee applies to the full subscription amount, not to Patreon’s net take.
